Stålboga/Stålbåga

The story of Stålboga begins as early as the 14th century when an ironworks started at Stålboga croft.

Stålboga is located on a peninsula in lake Eklången. The surroundings consist of vast, hilly forest areas with marshes and bogs in the depressions. Stålboga has a long history as one of the large mills in the municipality of Flen. The name goes back to In the 1470s.

In 1641, a hammer smithy was built along the river that flows into Eklången. The business was part of a larger mining environment with mines in the eastern part of Dunker and Björndammen's blast furnace. The iron ore comes from Starrsäter's mines, which were discovered in 1625. And which constituted the richest ore deposit in Åkers bergslag. The ore was transported on the so-called Malmvägen to Björndammen's blast furnace, a distance of about five kilometers. At Björndammen, the ore was converted into pig iron which was forged into bar iron at the hammer forges in Stålboga 2. At the end of the 1630s, permission was obtained to build a bar iron hammer. Stålboga and a long industrial era began in Stålboga.

The business was closed down at the end of the 19th century to be replaced for a period by Holmen's mill's wood wool factory, which lived on into the 1920s.

Stålboga station

Stålboga association station was built in 1895

The station manager had together with employees was also responsible for the area's post station. To meet the increased traffic, a second class and a third class waiting room were set up.

There was also a kiosk in the building, where drinks and the occasional bun were served to the military and other passengers during train changes. There were also sales of sweets, chocolate, etc. No cars had yet come into major operation, so the flow of travelers was quite lively.

In 1962, all passenger and freight traffic ceased in 1964. In 1969-1970, the Hosjö-Stålboga tracks were demolished, except for the part that the Swedish Tram Society took over between Malmköping and Hosjö by road 55.

On March 5, 1987, the station building burned to the ground due to an overflow in the electrical system in the basement. Firefighters could not save the house as the supply of water tired. The tenant at the time was named Stålberg.

The Mansion

Stålboga manor house with main building from the 18th century moved there from Tunafors in Eskilstuna. The wings are from the 18th century and has stood on the site ever since.

There are indications in old archives that the farm has existed at least since the 15th century.

During the second half of the 17th century, the farm changed owners a number of times. Relatives who owned Stålboga include Carpelan, Kurck, Friesendorf, Bernhard, Fitinghoff and Jonsson. In the late 1870s and 80s, the old mansion burned to the ground and the whole area began to decay. The mill was closed down (see Stålboga Mill). One of the buildings was used as a wood wool factory until 1947. The railway, which was designed for the needs of the ironworks, now had to serve the wood wool factory. In 1910 Jonsson sold Stålboga mill with subordinate Björndammen's blast furnace and Starrsäter's mines to Holmen AB in 1910.

In 1979, the Juto family bought the property Stålboga mill (Stålbogatorp) from Holmen AB. In 1984, the Juto family bought Tunafors Carolingian mansion, rehabilitated it and moved it to Stålboga, where it was built on the old foundation.
